Camino Day 2 Roncesvalles to Zabaldika
A lovely walk today through forest, then rural landscape, finishing following the Arga River into Zabaldika. Lunch was at Zubiri, a town which serves pilgrims as a destination for overnight accommodation for a walking stage. I wanted to experience a quieter journey so have planned to be out of sync with the normal daily stage of 20-25 km, thereby avoiding crowds and staying in the smaller albergues.
A massive magnesite production facility about 2km long takes the distance between the two towns of Zubiri and Urdaniz
An old church built in the 12th century originally as a fortress then adapted to a church in the 13th century.
Arga River
Albergue I’m staying at tonight- donativo.. bed dinner breakfast pay donation.
The church of St. Stephen attached to the albergue, dates from the beginning of 13th century.
After our evening meal the pilgrims staying at the albergue were all invited to a blessing in the church. Upstairs we were all given blankets for warm and we rescued the blessing in English, Spanish, Hungarian and Italian .
We shared our ‘why’ for the Camino and reflected on how we felt so far. It was a respectful gathering, I have felt very small having walked in the footsteps of pilgrims before.
Experiencing the simplicity of being a pilgrim and observing history, different cultures and the natural environment of the Camino makes me feel very grateful
