Lancaster Bomber Just Jane NX611

The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre is a memorial to Bomber command that had over 55000 aircrew lost their lives in WWII. The RAF base at East Kirby is where the heritage centre is located and was one of many bases used during the WWII.

No 57 & No 630 Squadron we’re based here from 1943 to 1945. 164 Lancaster’s were lost with over 1100 casualties just from here alone. As part of the restoration of aircrafts from the centre they offer taxis riders in a Lancaster and a Mosquito up & down the runway. All runs are booked out till May 2024 as only run through summer months. Today I did the 2 hour tour around & inside the Lancaster.

For such a large aircraft the inside is so tight. Built for a payload of bombs but not much comfort for 7 crew & 2 pigeons freezing temperatures duration of 8/12 hours missions over Germany.

During the First World War carrier pigeons played a crucial role in delivering messages from the front line. The Second World War once again saw pigeons called upon and one of their roles saw them become part of a bomber crew, and many would play a vital role in the rescuing of downed Allied air crew, with a number winning the PDSA Dickin Medal as a result of their actions

Lest We Forget.
