Salt mine tour

After the very sombre tour of Auschwitz and Birkenau the last part of our tour day was spent on a 2 1/2 hour tour at a salt mine in Wieliczka. Operating for over 700 years with 240 km of tunnels and descending 300 metres, our tour only saw a tiny portion of the mine. We went 160 m  below the surface and saw the magnificent carvings and rooms constructed from salt. Mainly timber was used as the other construction material, due to salt’s corrosive quality metals cannot be used in the salt mine.

UNESCO heritage site.
